History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

The library of the University of Caen was destroyed in the Allied invasion of Normandy. The American Committee for the Library of Caen, along with its Canadian counterpart, collected over 150,000 books and donated funds for the restoration of the library. Columbia Professor Horatio Smith served as Chair of the American Committee. After Professor Smith died, his widow assumed the post and was awarded the French Legion of Honor.
