Description

Scope and Content

This collection consists of the production and administrative files of the national Pre-Med Journal published in the 1960s. The journal included articles from practitioners about their fields of medicine avoiding technical issues: doctor/patient relationships and careers in pharmacology, psychiatry, surgery. There are also articles about medical school admissions (numbers, interview policies, issues for women applicants), life in medical school (the second year) and information about the pre-medical advisory system at Columbia College.

Series I. Pre-Med journal records, 1960-1970

The majority of the Pre-Med journal records are production files, which include layouts, proofs, edited manuscripts and related correspondence. The files are organized by volume and issue number. There are also general files, which include correspondence with Merck, Sharp and Dohme, the members of the Pre-Med Board of Consultants, and prospective article writers. There is also correspondence requesting permission to reprint articles, request for subscriptions, and a number of letters of appreciation.

History / Biographical Note

History

The Pre-Med Society of Columbia College first published a journal in 1942. Publication of this journal, featuring articles by medical professionals and Columbia students, was suspended during the rest of the World War II, resuming publication in 1946. This first version of publication ended around 1957. In 1961, the Pre-Med journal was reintroduced. The second run of the journal was supported by a grant from the pharmaceutical company Merck, Sharp and Dohme. Along with the new funding, the journal had a wider audience: it was available in 280 college campuses across the country. The journal addressed issues in the field of medicine from practicing physicians and aimed to help students plan their medical careers. Students in the Pre-Med Society requested submissions and reprints, edited content, and managed the publication. Pre-Med was published three times a year and ran from 1960 to 1970.
