A Pennsylvania All-State football team player as a high school senior from Pottsville, PA, Leo Ward was recruited to play football at Columbia. Ward played under the legendary Coach Lou Little as defensive halfback and later defensive end. He recalled team pep talks by former President Dwight Eisenhower, then university president. As a senior, he coached of the lightweight or 150-pound football team.
