Originally compiled by the Office of the Secretary and later by the Academic Appointments Office, this card catalogue contains a record of all appointment letters sent to faculty members beginning in the 1890s. The cards include the appointees' name, degrees, and a record of each appointment (rank, school and academic year). For faculty and officers of research, the last date on the cards is June 30, 1990. For officers of administration, there are cards with information through July 1987. The cards are divided between inactive (last appointment ended before June 1990) and active (still at Columbia in 1990). The active appointments are also subdivided by school or division.
Series I: Inactive Appointment Records, 1890-1990
This series contains the records of individuals whose last appointment ended before June 1990. Appointment cards are organized alphabetically.
Series II: Active Appointment Records, 1940s-1990
This series contains the records of individuals who were still at Columbia in 1990. Inactive appointments are organized by school or division.
This collection is arranged into two series.

From the 1754 Charter, fellows, professors, tutors and all faculty members "hold and enjoy their said office or place, either at the will and pleasure of the Governors of the said Corporation, or during his or their Good Behaviour." While the length and terms of an appointment have changed since, all appointments are determined by the Board and are held "during the pleasure of the Trustees." The Academic Appointments Office oversees new and recurring appointments, sabbaticals, leaves of absence, promotions and salary increases. They report to the chief academic officer, the Provost.
