Series I: Columbia Medals

This series includes medals and pins related to Columbia University. The medals have been divided into subseries defined by subject areas: academics, athletics, awards, student groups, etc.. Item descriptions include donor/awardee, dates, inscription information (R:recto and V:verson), accession information, item dimensions (in cm), and manufacturer, where available.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only Columbia affiliates may view materials on-site. After clicking 'Submit Request', affiliates will login with their UNI and password. Appointments are required and will be arranged according to each individual repository's policy.

Subseries I.1: Academic

This subseries contains medals awarded as academic prizes to students from 1833 to 1845. The medals are organized by recipient's last name. The subject area for the award is sometimes translated from the Latin; for others, the abbreviated Latin subject is rendered as it appears on the medal.

Subseries I.2: Alumni

The medals in this subseries are from alumni or class events from 1858 to 1968. The Societies organized different class year alumni into groupings. The Society of Old Graduates was originally used for those classes older than the 1880s. The Society of the Early 80s and the Upper 80s were for the classes from 1880 to 1889. The Forty-Niners (1890-1896) refers the last classes to study at the 49th Street and Madison Avenue campus (before the Morningside campus). By the 1920s, any alum past his 30th reunion could join the Society of Older Graduates.
