The student-run Columbia Spectator newspaper was established in 1877 and continues publication to the present day with reportage on Columbia University and Morningside Heights. Contributions to the Spectator are open to the University community and general public, but staff is comprised primarily of undergraduate students at Columbia University. In 1962, a desire to achieve more unbiased reporting and alleviate conflicts of interest initiated the separation of operations from University sponsorship. The publication has since run independently.
