History / Biographical NoteHistorical NoteThe Alumni Association of Doctors of Philosophy was established in 1906. In 1920, the group changed their name to the Alumni Association of the Graduate Schools and expanded their membership. The group is currently known as Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association. The Graduate Faculties Alumni (GFA) awarded the Columbia University Graduate Faculties Alumni Awards for Excellence. Started in 1967, the award recognized alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the world of scholarship, public affairs, or both. The GFA was also responsible for the Adele Mendelsohn Memorial Award, which was given annually to a Columbia staff member who has made important contributions to the life of the University, especially in concern for graduate students. Since the 1990s, the GSAS Alumni Association presents the Dean's Award for Distinguished Achievement and the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award at the annual GSAS Alumni Awards Dinner. |
