Description

Scope and Content

Unbound manuscripts containing approximately 500 Italian and Hebrew papers (letters, court orders, receipts, invoices, leases, synagogue seating charts, IOUs, proclamations, etc.) documenting the activities of the Scuola Grande Synagogue (also known as the Norsa Synagogue or the Scuola del Torrazzo) and the Jewish community of Mantua, Italy. The papers are not in chronological order, and span a period of 122 years, between 1707 and 1829. Many of the records in the collection were created during the Napoleonic occupation of Italy (1805-1814).

Some of the most frequently recurring names include those of Abram Isach Norsa and his family members (who at regular intervals acted as 'Directors' or 'Masters' of the Scuola Grande); the Finzi and Sacerdoti families. The name of David Sinigaglia, a clerk who acted on behalf of the Synagogue, is found throughout the collection. The many receipts and invoices from Italian artisans and merchants paint a picture of the socio-economic life of Mantua beyond the walls of the ghetto, and a significant number of Napoleonic letters and proclamations sheds light on the French regime's radical policies with regards to religious freedom.

History / Biographical Note

Historical Note

The Scuola Grande Synagogue in Mantua, Italy was built in the early 16th century. It was one of six synagogues that survived the War of Mantuan Succession (1628-1631), but was destroyed in 1940. In addition to serving as a place of worship and cultural center, the synagogue also owned land that it rented to tenants. During the Napoleonic occupation of Italy, the synagogue was required to collect its financial records for review for tax assessment, and it appears that much of this collection was created during that time.
