Biographical / Historical

Hortense Calisher was a novelist and short-story writer whose unpredictable turns of phrase, intellectually challenging fictional situations and complex plots captivated and puzzled readers for a half-century.

In addition to producing a large body of written work, Calisher lectured on literature and taught creative writing at several colleges and universities in America and in Japan, the Philippines and Thailand. Miss Calisher was president of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters from 1987 to 1990 and president of PEN in 1986 and 1987.
