Series VIII: "The Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies" holds material related to the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, of which Slater was the President and CEO from 1969-1986. Also contains files related to Aspen Berlin and correspondence between Slater and Robert O. Anderson. There is additional oral history material for Robert O. Anderson housed in this series.

Subseries VIII.1: Aspen Institute General, 2 linear feet

Subseries VIII.1: "Aspen Institute General" contains meeting minutes, material from Aspen Institute conferences including the conferences at Vail and Wye, correspondence between Slater and other members of The Aspen Institute including its founders, material from branches in France and Japan, and an oral interview with Ed Edwin. The series also contains later drafts of Sidney Hyman's The Aspen Idea and the 1975 published edition.

Subseries VIII.3: "Robert O. Anderson" holds interviews between J.E. Slater and Robert O. Anderson, two key figures in the transformation of The Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies into a global phenomena. The series also contains minutes from meetings hosted by Robert O. Anderson as well as his speeches, articles, and publications. This material was originally bound, but the papers have been removed from their bindings due to rust. The labels in the series are identical to the titles of the bound manuscripts.
