The collection consists of 25 letters between C.R. Lanman and his colleagues and former students concerning the study of Sanskrit. There are letters from Franklin Edgerton, J.D.M. Ford, F.P. Graves, C.N. Greenough, G.C.O. Haas, Samuel Hill, A.B. Keith, C.T. Keller, Truman Michelson, Walter Miller, O.H. Mott, W.L. Phelps, G.A. Reisner, Karl Ruprecht, J.M. Stahl, and Fiske Warren.

College professor at The Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University. He was born in Norwich CT, received his B.A. (1871) and his Ph.D. (1873) from Yale University. In 1876, he went to The Johns Hopkins University as a post-doctoral fellow and taught a course in Sanskrit. He was appointed assistant professor of Sanskrit in the Dept. of Philology in 1878, and associate professor in 1879. Lanman accepted a position at Harvard as full professor of Sanskrit in 1880. He remained at Harvard until his death.
