Series I: Cataloged Correspondence, 1976

This series consists of a small amount of correspondence from Norman Cousins.

Box 1 Cousins, Norman, 1976

Series II: Arranged Correspondence, 1927, 1947-2016

This series contains primarily personal correspondence and cards.

Subseries II.1: Alphabetical, 1950-2016

This subseries consists of correspondence from individuals, and includes letters addressed to both Hazzard and Steegmuller. The correspondents include artists, writers, other couples and friends, and some business contacts and editors. These contacts include many women – artists, writers, friends, and wives. There is probably also some reader correspondence mixed in here, as many readers sent letters directly to Hazzard's home address in New York City.

The correspondence is primarily personal, but there is some professional correspondence in individual files.

Although the correspondence is primarily incoming, there are some outgoing copies filed in individual files, as well as two files of miscellaneous outgoing copies filed at the end of the subseries. In addition, a few correspondents gave correspondence received from Hazzard to the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, including Patricia Clarke, Donald Keene, and Carlo Knight.

Files for individuals may contain biographical sketches, clippings, memorials, mementoes, obituaries, photographs, printed materials, programs, and other material in addition to correspondence.

Much of the correspondence was entirely unorganized and mixed together in boxes when it received by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The processing archivist identified and arranged the correspondence as much as possible, but there may be errors in the identification of individual pieces of correspondence, particularly where multiple individuals have the same first name. There are several folders of unidentified correspondence and fragments filed at the end of the subseries.

The majority of cards and postcards remain unsorted.

There is additional correspondence in Series III: United Nations Writings and Related Materials, Series IV: The Great Fire and Related Materials, and Series VII: Professional Files.

There is additional correspondence filed with the Francis Steegmuller papers, also held by the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Correspondents that are filed with the Steegmuller papers include the Breunig family, William Maxwell, Muriel Spark, Patrick White, and others.

Correspondence with Graham Greene, as well as manuscripts and other materials related to Greene on Capri, are held by Georgetown University.

There is additional correspondence for Murray Bail and Elizabeth Harrower held by the State Library of New South Wales, Australia.

Correspondence sent to Muriel Spark by Hazzard and Steegmuller is held by the National Library of Australia.

Correspondence is arranged alphabetically. Married couples are generally filed under the married name, which was often used in private correspondence even when another name was used professionally. This also allows for the couple's correspondence to be filed together physically in the collection. The full name – such as Elizabeth Spencer Rusher or Stephen Wadsworth Zinsser – is used in the file title when it is known.

Subseries II.5: Correspondence from Book Library, 1949-2006

Hazzard and Steegmuller often filed correspondence and other materials inside of books in their library.

This subseries consists of correspondence that was removed from the book library after Hazzard's death and added to the archival collection at the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. It includes letters, postcards, notes, clippings, and manuscripts.

Hazzard still had a large number of books in her apartment at the time of her death in 2016. Although a selection of books from this library are with Hazzard's papers at the Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the vast majority – 299 books - became part of the collections at the State Library of New South Wales.

Materials in Box 11 and Box 23 Folder 51 were removed from the library at Hazzard's apartment and sent to the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. These were unsorted, and information regarding where they were filed within the library has been lost. Materials in Box 23 Folders 1-50 were removed from books selected for the Rare Book & Manuscript Library's collection after their receipt at the Library. Correspondence in Box 23 Folders 52-53 were found in books given to the New York Society Library; this correspondence was then given to the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The original filing location of these materials is noted in the container list.

The vast majority of the book library - 299 books - became part of the collections at the State Library of New South Wales, and some additional books became part of the collections at the New York Society Library.
