Description

Summary

A collection of magazine covers from World War Two, relating primarily to women (series I) and the American Flag (series II).

  • Series I: Women, 1943

A collection of magazine covers, most with the WWW (Women War Workers) torch insignia, depicting women in occupations ordinarily performed by men. Apparently part of a National Labor Day, 1943, tribute to American women on the home front as partners of American men at war. Among the magazines represented are: Banking; The Christian Science Monitor; Harper's; Motor Age; Popular Mechanics; The Progressive Grocer; Safety Engineering; The Saturday Evening Post; and The Timberman.

  • Series II: American Flags, 1942-1944

A collection of magazine covers displaying the American Flag and often the motto "United We Stand.". Most of the covers are dated 1942; some are undated, and at least one is dated 1944. Included in the collection are two items from the Victory Display Committee for June, 1942.

Processing Information

Entered in AMC 12/06/90.

This collection was created in 2023 from two existing collections: "World War II magazine covers: American Flag" (old bib ID 4079634) and "World War II magazine covers: Women" (this bib ID). Since the collections shared similar content, had the same provenance, and were already housed in the same box, they were combined.
