Summary

Correspondence from turn-of-the-century mathematicians written to White. The letters combine personal and business matters and reveal the warm friendship which existed between the scholars. Of interest are the efforts of these men in getting important mathematical journals published.

History / Biographical Note

Biographical / Historical

Henry Seely White was born in May 20, 1861, Cazenovia, New York. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1882 and obtained his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1891. He taught Mathematics and was a chair of Mathematics at the Northwestern University and Vassar College. White was vice-president of the American Mathematical Society in 1901, President (1907-1908), editor of the Annals of Mathematics (1899-1905), and editor of the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society (1907-1914). He died on May 20, 1943, Poughkeepsie, New York.
