Description

Summary

Typescript draft, bound dummy, binding samples, and other materials for "Phelps' Universal Club Guide" by Phelps. This work, a descriptive list of major clubs throughout the world, was never published. Another book, however, entitled ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE MODERN CLUB, which was derived from the "Guide" was first published in 1902.

Biographical / Historical

Edward Bunnell Phelps (1863-1915), a graduate of Yale University was founder of the monthly insurance journal Thrift later entitled American Underwriter Magazine and Insurance Review. Phelps planned to write a book called Phelps' Universal Club Guide which was never published. It is the material for that book that is contained within this collection. Another book Origin and Evolution of the Modern Club which was derived from the Guide was first published in 1902.
