Summary

Letters to and from Nicolai Berezowsky documenting his career and covering his development as violinist, conductor, and composer. The profession is well represented in the correspondence, with 63 letters from David Diamond, 22 from Serge Koussevitsky, 72 from Nicolai Lopatnikoff, and 31 from Eugene Ormandy; others in the collection are Leon Barzin, Aaron Copland, Henry Cowell, Vladimir Golschmann, Eugene Goosens, Alex Grechaninov, Ernest Hutcheson, Douglas Moore, Paul Nordoff, Wallingford Riegger, Artur Rodzinski, Roger Sessions, Harold Spivacke, Leopold Stokowski, and Olga Samaroff Stokowski. Biographical / Historical

Violinist, conductor, member of the Coolidge String Quartet, composer in the burgeoning era of "American music".

Nicolai Berezowsky was born in St. Petersburg Russia on May 17, 1900. He left Russia in 1920 finally settling in New York in 1922. From 1923 to 1929 Berezowsky played with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He conducted and played for radio and was a member of the Coolidge String Quartet from 1935-1940. Among his compositions are symphonies chamber pieces and the children's opera Babar the Elephant 1953 Berezowsky died August 27, 1953.
