Description

Summary

Correspondence, typed copies of poems, printed material, and newspaper clippings concerning Germany during and following World War I. The main body of letters, 1916-1925, is from Mrs. C. Robert Grimm (Betty). Her letters are revealing about circumstances in Germany and opinions there about the U.S. in war-time and after. Ten letters from John Cresson Trautwine, Jr., 1916-1919, are about Mrs. Grimm after her husband's death, his will, and the problems of sending food supplies to Germany after the war.

Biographical / Historical

Rebekah Crawford lived in New York City.

Mrs. C. Robert Grimm (Betty) was caught in Germany at the outbreak of the War when visiting her husband's family. Mr. Grimm (1849-1916) had moved to the U.S. in 1881, becoming a construction engineer in Philadelphia and New York. After his death in Germany, the War made it impossible for his wife to return to New York.

John Cresson Trautwine, Jr. (1850-1924) was a civil engineer in Philadelphia and editor of his father's annual CIVIL ENGINEER'S POCKET BOOK.
