Many of the journal pages were cut out or clipped before the work was acquired by Columbia University. The material is all in French and is in an extremely small though legible script.
The notes and literary journals of Jules Champfleury cover approximately 1,100 pages of manuscript bound into seven volumes. The journal records Champfleury's thoughts, projects, experiences, and anecdotes which he planned to utilize in future novels or poems. There is much literary and personal information. Among those discussed are Nerval, the Goncourts, Eugene Sue, Baudelaire, Houssaye, Zola, Stendhal, Balzac, and many others. Champfleury also notes books he has read, or intends to read and marks the progress of his own work. Also, 49 letters from Champfleury addressed to the publisher, Georges Charpentier and others, 1864-1887. They relate to the publication of various of his works. There is also one biographical manuscript in another hand.
