Description

Scope and Content

This collection consists of the constitution of the Board of Editors (1886), the records of the Columbia Students Publishing Company (1904 to 1916), and correspondence by and for the Spectator editors. These include letters from U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Dwight D. Eisenhower; University Presidents Grayson Kirk and William McGill; College Deans David B. Truman, Edward W. Barrett and Henry G. Coleman; various other officers and faculty of the University, and several alumni and non-affiliated people. Many of the letters are addressed to Alan S. Lake, editor of the Spectator in 1966. Others concern the 1975 Conference at Arden House; the retirement of Dean Lawrence H. Chamberlain in 1958; the death of Reed Harris (Columbia B.A., 1932), former State Department Official, in 1982; academic grading in 1955; the gymnasium in Morningside Park; and a sit-in by the Revolutionary Student Brigade in 1975. In addition, there is a manuscript of the 1948-1949 "Report on Spectator Development Program."

History / Biographical Note

Historical Note

The Columbia Daily Spectator has been published since 1877 as the newspaper of Columbia College. It incorporated under the laws of the State of New York in 1904 under the name of "The Columbia Students Publishing Company." In 1962 the "Spectator Publishing Company" was formed and since then, the paper has operated independent of Columbia University. It is staffed entirely by students of Columbia and Barnard Colleges, primarily juniors.
