Five bound volumes containing letters of Aleksandr Semenovich Kovalevskiĭ to his wife; to his eldest son, Mikhail; and letters by his children and by other persons. Most of the letters are from 1845-1846 and 1853-1860, many being from the time of his military service in the Crimean War. There are also a few items from the mid-1820s (a letter to A. S. Kovalevskiĭ, a few class notes). Four of the volumes are stamped"Perepiska moego ottsa s mamashei︠u︡..", the fifth "Pisḿa s 1855-1860 g." The volumes were bound by Mikhail Kovalevskiĭ.

Aleksandr Semenovich Kovalevskii (Александр Семенович Ковалевский; August 23, 1807- February 27, 1877), Russian Lieutenant General, participant of the Caucasus campaigns and the Crimean War, military lawyer, chairman of the Moscow and then Kharkov Military District Court.
Graduated from the 3rd Cadet Corps in 1827. In 1831 participated in the campaign of suppression of the November Uprising (also known as the Polish–Russian War 1830–1831). Since 1853 he served in the Caucasus and took part in military campaigns against the highlanders. In 1854-1855 fought against the Turks in Transcaucasia.
In 1858 was appointed acting head of the Kharkov military settlements and in 1860 he was promoted to Major General and confirmed in his position, but was dismissed in 1862. In 1863 became a commander of the 26th Infantry Division. In March 1866, was promoted to Lieutenant General. In 1868 was appointed chairman of the Moscow Military District Court, and the following year was transferred to a similar position in Kharkov.
