Description

Summary

Papers of Evgeniia Il'inichna Berestovskaia, consisting of manuscripts, correspondence, personal documents, and photographs.

A bulk of the collection is her manuscript reminiscences (ca. 250 p.) on a broad range of topics, including World War I; theatres in Petrograd, 1917-1918; the emigration in Europe; and World War II in Yugoslavia. There is also a couple of her poems.

There is also a correspondence of 1955 with officials about displaced persons and refugees in Austria. Documents include work certificates, membership IDs, travelling permits, etc.

Among photographs there are personal and group photographs from Vurberk (Slovenia) and Salzburg (Austria). Also included are postcards with the views of Vurbek Castle. One of the postcard has a postal stamp with Hitler's portrait.

Papers include a couple of clippings and fragments from DP publications.

Biographical / Historical

Evgeniia Il'inichna Berestovskaia, 1889, St. Petersburg. - 1976, Cannes (nee Kalashnikova; stage pseudonym Dymova), actress, religious figure, writer, author of memoirs.

Actress of the Literary and Artistic Theater Society (Suvorin Theater) in St. Petersburg. After the revolution emigrated to Yugoslavia in 1919, then lived in Austria. In the 1950s she settled in Cannes. Performed with reading of her works and as a pianist, participated in concerts and dramatical performances of the Literaturno-artisticheskogo obshchestva (Literary and artistic society) in Nice.

Author of poetry and prose. Published in magazine "Vozrozhdenie" (since 1951), newspapers "Russkaia mysl'", "Novoe russkoe slovo" and others. Was the secretary of the Church of St. Michael in Cannes.

She left her memories "Rossiia, 1916-1917" (Novoe russkoe slovo, 1967, October 26, 28), "Karintii v mae 1945 goda" (Novoe russkoe slovo, 1962, July 1), "Poslednie dni voiny" (Russkaia mysl', 1962, March 22), "Teatral'naia shkola imeni A. S. Suvorina"(Vozrozhdenie, 1963, No. 139), "O bylom"(Novoe russkoe slovo, 1971, Sept. 5).

Buried in the Abadi cemetery.
