The three diaries (numbered 4, 5, and 6, in all 517p.) cover July 1863 - October 1865, when the author was stationed mainly in Stavropolʹ.

Petr Ivanovich D'Alviro-Bastien (1825-1889), a high-ranking officer in the Russian army. Born in Italy, as a child got to Russia, where he was raised and educated and became an officer. From St. Petersburg he went to the Caucasus, and after its conquest was General M. D. Skobelev's adjutant in the Turkestan campaign, then commanded the Apsheron Regiment, retired as a Major-General. His name has several spelling variations: D'Alviro-Bastieno, D'Alviro-Bast'en, D'Alviro-Bast'eno.
