Biographical / Historical

The recipient of this Tolstoy's letter is Dr. William L. Kantor (Chaim-Wolf Lipmanovich Kantor, b. 1866 in the Russian Pale). After hearing Tolstoy's "Kreutzer Sonata" read and discussed, he decided to write to Leo Tolstoy about his impressions and the profound response which it awakened in him. March 30, 1890 he sent his letter to Tolstoy, explaining in the course of it his personal attitude toward the question of non'resistance. He also put to Tolstoy certain puzzling practical problems related to the application of Tolstoy's doctrine. Dr. Kantor didn't preserve the text of his own letter. Tolstoy replied on April 9, 1890.
