History / Biographical Note

Content Description

Columbia English professor, George Philip Krapp (1872-1934), wrote his doctoral thesis on The Legend of St. Patrick's Purgatory (1899) and became an instructor in the English department at Teacher's College in 1897. George Philip Krapp's focus was on Old English and Anglo-Saxon poetry, and he was the editor of a six-volume work entitled Saxon Poetic Records (1931-1953). Krapp was also interested in the history of the English language, writing Modern English and its Growth and Present Use (1900), arguing that "good English" was not determined by the conformity to grammatical laws, but by the common use of language. Krapp wrote several other volumes on the use of the English language in prose and among speakers in America.

Series I: List of Folders


Box 1 Folder 1 Diary of a European Trip, 1931

Kept by Kapp's wife Elisabeth (von Saltza) Krapp (1884—1978). The family spent a sabbatical year away from the US. There were three children, Robert (sometimes Bobby, Columbia '35), Philip (sometimes Pippy, Columbia '40), Elizabeth (sometimes Bet or Betty, Barnard '34). The diary is mostly a record of the things they saw and did (as well as their impressions of the monuments/museums). 166 page ms (journal form, A6).

Box 1 Folder 1a Photographs from the European Trip, 1931

Box 1 Folder 2 Letters from George Philip Krapp to Eiizabeth von Saltza, 1911-1913, 40 letters

Letters of courtship and early marriage. They include eferences to colleagues and work at Columbia and there is, at least, one poem (a Valentine's Day poem).

Box 1 Folder 3 Miscellaneous letters and postcards to the family; some financial reports

Includes letters from Austria and from England (where he was working on the transcription/translation of the Exeter Book). Letters to and from GPK and colleagues. These include discussion of matters of substantial interest on scholarly work and the institution. Some are lighthearted; some more serious.

Box 1 Folder 4 Offprints, 30 items

Document GPK's early scholarly career; letters from colleagues at other institutions are interleaved. Some advertisements for public lectures; course syllabi. 30 articles plus an index

Box 1 Folder 5 Beowulf manuscript, 40 pages

Box 2 Folder 6 Riddle poems

These are poems of a pedagogical nature in typescript designed to teach language skills to children. There are ca. 20 of these poems and an introduction.

Box 2 Folder 7 Verses for Children

Approximately 100 plus typed sheets of poetry for children; one group entitled "Songs of Gladness: Sung for Little Children by a Father of Two" and "The Old Mother Earth: Rhymes and Song Book." Order as found. Some duplicates.

Box 2 Folder 8 Photographs of George Philip Krapp and his family

Box 2 Folder 9 Robert Martin (Krapp) Adams (1915-1996), "Winter Arches: A Private Book". Autobiographical manuscript that deals with his upbringing and years at Columbia.
