Historical Note

The Columbia University-Barnard College Joint Trustee Committee was appointed in 1971 "to act as a steering committee to review the existing agreement between the two schools, to recommend changes, and to redefine the relationship between the two institutions." The Committee was announced in a joint statement by Martha Peterson, Barnard College President, and William J. McGill, Columbia University President. Barnard trustees wanted to "maintain Barnard's autonomy and integrity" while Columbia trustees and administrators were looking toward merger or near merger of the two faculties. The operating agreement also precluded coeducation in Columbia College. On January 22, 1982, Columbia President Michael Sovern announced that Columbia College would become coeducational in the fall of 1983. In exchange, and to stress Barnard's continued independence, the tenure process for Barnard professors was altered. Barnard remained an autonomous institution with its own faculty, administration, president, trustees and its own endowment and physical plant.
