Abstract

The Zhang Fakui papers emphasize General Zhang's military career as a Chinese Nationalist General during the important years of the Sino-Japanese War. The bulk of the papers consist of documents and maps relating to the history of the Fourth War Zone which he commanded during the Sino-Japanese War dating from 1940 to 1947. Also included are documents related to the governance and development of the Hainan dating from 1939 to 1949. Materials include correspondence, documents, maps, photographs, reports, manuscripts, and diaries.

Description

Summary

The Zhang Fakui papers contains original photographs, correspondence, diaries, documents, and maps relating to the operations history of the Fourth War Zone and the governance and development of Hainan. The 22 items of correspondence consist of incoming and outgoing letters from American wartime commanders in China and others associated with him and several manifestoes by the "Third Force" political organization, dating from 1945 to 1948. There are also microfilmed correspondence from 1935 to 1966. The Fourth War Zone papers focus on the Corp's operation history during the Sino-Japanese War and also include the documents and maps, as well as manuscripts of General General Zhang's speeches and reflection reports from the subunits. The Hainan documents are materials General Zhang adopted after appointed to administer the island in 1949. Also included in the papers are copies of his diaries from 1939 to 1947 and photographs from 1914 to 1960 depicting his life, as well as him his fellow generals as patriotic military generals with enormous support from the people.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Given to the Chinese oral history project in 1965 and 1968 during interviews conducted by Julie How with Zhang Fakui in Hong Kong. Parts of the collection (the Fourth War Zone papers) were purchased from Mr. Lo Fu-yao, General Zhang's associate in Hong Kong, June 1966. Microfilmed and photocopied in April 1968. Transfer to RBML with Chinese oral history project collection in 1980.

Biographical/Historical

Zhang Fakui (pinyin: Zhang, Fakui; Wade Giles: Chang, Fa-k'uei; traditional Chinese: 張發奎; simplified Chinese: 张发奎; courtesy name: Xianghua, 向華; original name: Fakui, 发葵; alias: Yibin, 逸斌) was born in Guangdong province, 1896. He was a Chinese Nationalist General who participated in the Northern Expedition, Nanchang uprising, and the Sino-Japanese War. He served as the Commander-in-Chief responsible for the Fourth War Zone (or 4th Corps, 第四戰區) covering the Guangdong and Fujian province of China during the Sino-Japanese War. He was also given the nickname of the "Hero of the Iron Army" (鐵軍英雄) for his military service. In 1949, he was appointed as the Chief Executive of the Hainan special region. In the same year, General Zhang retired from his position and moved to Hong Kong, where he resided until his death in 1980.
