Content Description

The Tingfu Tsiang papers mainly document Dr. Tsiang's diplomatic career as an ambassador in the United States and the United Nations. Materials included in the papers are his personal and official correspondence, memoranda, press release, documents and statements presented at the United Nation, and news clippings relating to his activities as China and then later Taiwan's Ambassador to the U.N. and the U.S., dating from 1942 to 1965. There are also documents related to the Russian interference in the Chinese Civil War, as well as materials about the China Foundation dating from 1962 to 1964, and also general news clippings are articles about him and his visit to Taiwan in 1956.

Biographical/Historical

Tingfu Fuller Tsiang (Wade Giles: Tsiang, Tingfu; pinyin: Jiang, Tingfu; Chinese: 蔣廷黻) was born in Hunan province, 1895. He began studying abroad in 1911 at the age of 16. In 1914, he studied history at the Oberlin College in Ohio and obtained his B.A. in 1918. In 1919, he began his graduate study at Columbia University and he received his Ph.D in history, 1923. After returning to China, he was a professor at Nankai University then Tsinghua University, where he later became the head of the history department and published numerous works in Chinese and English. In 1935, he left academia and became involved in politics. He was an Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1936 to 1938. In 1945, he served as the Permanent Representative of China to the U.N., and was also the Ambassador to the United States. He died in New York, 1965, at the age of 70.
