Andrew Alpern Collection of Edward Gorey Materials, 1954-2019

Series I: Original artwork, 1976-1986

Series I contains etchings, collographs, silkscreen prints, and one original drawing by Edward Gorey. The series also includes three photographic prints of Edward Gorey posing with cats. Some items in the series were formerly framed. Gorey did not select the frames, which were removed for preservation purposes.

Box 2 Folder 1 Item 8 Original drawing of Dracula and Lucy, circa 1977, Black ink on white board, signed by Edward Gorey in ink. Formerly framed in a dark gray molding of rectangular profile, with a light gray beveled mat and a dark gray inner beveled mat. Frame removed 2019 June 20.

Box 2 Folder 11 Item 2 Six etchings, 1977, Numbered 42/120 and signed in pencil by Edward Gorey. Contained within a linen-covered card-stock chemise, laid into a linen-covered solander box with brown leather spine label gold-stamped "Edward Gorey 1977."

Produced in 1977 in an edition of 120 (60 for Gotham Book Mart, 60 for Diogenes Verlag). These are "Child on Cliff," "In the Gymnasium," "Lady Under Elephant Table" (also called "Table Pausing Over a Lady"), "Child and Elephant Table," "Child on Animal" (also called "After the Christening"), and "Insect on Unicycle." Box 2 Folder 2-4 Item 3 Three etchings, 1977, Each numbered and signed in pencil by Edward Gorey. Each formerly framed in a gray small swan molding, with a mat wrapped in gray silk, and an inner dark gray mat with the bevel painted to match. Frame removed 2019 June 20.

Produced in an edition of 120; the etchings are "Table Pausing over a Lady" (11/120), "Insect on Unicycle" (11/120), and "After the Christening" (110/120). Original invoices in Box 5 Folder 9, "Alpern Gorey Invoices."

Box 2 Folder 5-6 Item 4 Two etchings, 1986, Each numbered 5/95 and signed in pencil by Edward Gorey. The woman holding a baby was formerly behind linen mat with silver-leaf fillet and framed in large silver-leaf swan molding. Frame removed 2019 June 20.

Box 1 Folder 7-17 Item 5 11 etchings of elephants, 1986, Each numbered 5/95 and signed in pencil by Edward Gorey.

The etchings are "Window Closing on a Bolster," "Child on a Topiary Holding an Animal," "Dog on Rock Scratching Himself," "Bat in a Moon," and "Boy on a Rock with Bottle."



Box 2 Folder 10 Item 1 Elefantômas, 1986 December, Signed by Edward Gorey in ink on the title page, with each of the images numbered and signed by Edward Gorey in pencil. With interleaving sheets and a paper band, all contained in a linen-covered portfolio with ties.

A sequence of nine prints published in December 1986, limited to 26 sets of collagraphs lettered A-Z and ten sets of monoprints numbered I -X. Printed on Arches Cover paper at the atelier of Emily Trevor, Brewster Massachusetts. This is set B.



Box 1 Folder 1 Item 7 Four silkscreen images of elephants, undated, Each printed on a folding card (with envelope), each numbered 4/12 and signed in pencil by Edward Gorey. All contained within a larger foil-lined envelope.
