Rufus W. Mathewson (1918-1978) was a professor of Russian language and literature at Columbia University, best known for his book"The Positive Hero in Russian Literature", published by the Columbia University Press in 1958, which is considered a classic in its field.He graduated Harvard in 1941 and earned his graduate degrees at Columbia, receiving his Ph.D. in 1954. He began teaching at Columbia in 1949 and was appointed a full professor in 1963. At Columbia, Mathewson taught the Colloquium on Laguage, Literature, History and Philosophy. He also served as chairman of the Slavic Languages Department in 1976 and 1977.
