Biographical / Historical

The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science was founded in 1864 by Thomas Egleston Jr. as the School of Mines and it is one of the oldest such institutions in the United States. It later was called the School of Mines, Engineering and Chemistry before becoming known as the School of Engineering and Applied Science. In 1997, the school was renamed once again in honor of Chinese businessman Z. Y. Fu, who had donated $26 million. Since the 1970s an alumni publication, intended for alumni and friends, focusing on the people, research and events occurring at the school has been produced by the communications team based in the Dean's Office. The publication has had several different names over the years. From 1979-1985 it was called Columbia Engineering News; for a brief period between October 1985 and May 1986 it was called Columbia University News Notes: School of Engineering and Applied Science; in Autumn 1986 it was renamed Columbia University Engineering News. In the spring of 2010 it assumed its current title of Columbia Engineering. It is currently published two times a year.
