This series contains records related to Mitchell's administration of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, as well as other related materials such as brochures, clippings, fliers, memorabilia, photographs, and programs.

All audio and video recordings are in Series: Recordings.

This subseries contains files related to the administration of the Dance Theatre of Harlem. These files include board records, correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes and notes, memoranda, questionnaires, proposals, and schedules.

These files contain information on many of the activities of the Dance Theatre including education programs, fundraising, residencies, outreach, partnerships, performances, public relations, strategic planning, and tours.

This subseries contains the chronological correspondence files for Arthur Mitchell in his administrative capacity at Dance Theatre of Harlem. This set is incomplete: some years are missing, and other years only contain only outgoing correspondence. The files include both internal and external correspondence, faxes, and memoranda. There is additional correspondence elsewhere in the administrative records in this series.

The filing system changed somewhat over time as this is noted in the container list, and some files in the mid-1980s have become disorganized although they were probably originally filed in chronological order. For early years (1972-1975), the files consist of copies of outgoing correspondence, only. For 1976-1980, there is a set of chronological files for outgoing correspondence, and a general file that includes both incoming and outgoing correspondence. For 1984-1988, incoming and outgoing correspondence was filed together. For 1995-2000, there is mix of incoming and outgoing files.

Dance Theatre of Harlem Puzzle, 1991

The puzzle is currently (2019) on display in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library near the Donor's Room and can be viewed during the Library's normal operating hours.

From the Exhibition Checkslist for "Arthur Mitchell: Harlem's Ballet Trailblazer": In 1991 Frank Bara, actor, artist, masseur, and puzzle-maker, unveiled an extraordinary work of folk art commemorating the Dance Theatre of Harlem's first twenty years. Commissioned by Arthur Mitchell, Bara's multilayered puzzle was eight feet long, had 4,000 pieces, and opened like a polyptych with five panels that told the history of the company and its many communities. At the center, in the form of a Fabergé egg, is the company's home on West 152nd Street, and below this, in chronological order, a list of the works (and their production credits), beginning with Ode to Otis and ending with The Cape, presented between 1969 and 1989. There is a row of major benefactors, and in the surrounding green and red space the angels who guided, inspired, and championed the company—Harry Belafonte, Cicely Tyson, Jessye Norman (with a musical note), George Balanchine, Dionne Warwick, Mary Schmidt Campbell, Tania León (with a baton), Madame Karinska, Lincoln Kirstein, Michel Fokine, Jacques d'Amboise, and many others. "Karel Shook" circles the crown at the apex of the egg, and at the very top in a halo of mint green is "AM" for Arthur Mitchell.
