Cady was one of the fourteen architects invited by the Cathedral trustees in 1888 to submit a design for the projected Cathedral, however, his design was not among the four chosen to compete in a second competition. Many of Cady's designs -- including for the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Opera House, and several New York hospitals -- were published in the architectural press between 1879 and 1892. The artist who made this rendering was Hughson Hawley, an English architectural painter who arrived in New York City in 1879 and was one of the most prolific architectural renders of the period.
