Michael Shapiro has been a professor at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism since 1992, retiring as emeritus professor of Journalism in 2026. He earned his BA from Brooklyn College in 1974 and his MA in Journalism from the University of Missouri in 1976.

He worked at newspapers in New Jersey and Chicago for five years before becoming a magazine writer. His work has appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and Sports Illustrated. He is the author of six non-fiction books, Japan: In the Land of the Broken Hearted, The Shadow in the Sun, Who Will Teach for America, Solomon's Sword, The Last Good Season and Bottom of the Ninth.

This small collection consists of research materials compiled by Shapiro for three books he most recently authored:

-Solomon's Sword: Two Families and the Children the State Took Away (1999) -The Last Good Season: Brooklyn, the Dodgers and Their Final Pennant Race Together (2003) -Bottom of the Ninth: Branch Rickey, Casey Stengel and the Daring Scheme to Save Baseball From Itself (2009)

Materials include: correspondence; newspaper and magazine stories; audio tapes and videos; interviews and a published copy of each book.
