Content Description

Esther Lewittes Mipaas was a documentary and portrait photographer. Born in the Bronx, she earned a MA in Art History from New York University, and worked as a rendered for the American Index of Design , a draftswoman for Lockheed, and a photographer for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. In New York, she photographed the iron bridges of central Park, architectural details on buildings throughout the city, and street life, especially in Jewish neighborhoods. Her attendance at Communist Party meetings was documented by the FBI.

In 1935, she married Cyril Mipaas, a Federal Arts Project photographer and cinematographer.
