Biographical Note

Born December 25, 1782 in Newtown, Long Island, Nathaniel Fish Moore was the son of physician William Moore and his wife Jane. The nephew of former Columbia president Benjamin Moore (1801-1811), he received an AB in 1802 and an MA in 1805 from Columbia College. He served as adjunct professor of Greek and Latin at Columbia from 1817 to 1835. He later sold his personal library to the college and was appointed as the first "full-time" university Librarian in 1838. He became the eighth president of Columbia College in 1842, resigned from the position in 1849, and continued to serve as a Trustee until 1851. Moore spent the remainder of his life pursuing his scholarly interests as well as becoming an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He lived to be almost 90 years old and died at the family home in the Highlands of the Hudson in 1872.
 </bioghist>
