Formerly part of the independent Missionary Research Library (MRL), these records were accessioned by the Burke Library at the time of the MRL's closure in 1976.
Dr. Samuel Guy Inman was an accomplished educator and authority on Latin American affairs. He was instrumental in the crafting of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy, the policy of the U.S. in relation to Latin America and Europe from 1933-1945. Holding academic appointments both in the U.S. and abroad, he was named a League of Nations commissioner to the Latin American Republics in 1935 and in 1945 participated in the Conference for the Organization of the United Nations held in San Francisco. Dr. Inman was an active member of the Disciples of Christ and organized conferences on Christian Work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Having attended Pan American Conferences on Christian missionary efforts since 1923, Inman later became executive secretary of the Committee on Cooperation in Latin America in 1925. This committee aimed to gather all the Protestant denominations in Latin America to focus on a variety of issues including education, evangelism, health ministry, religious education, and the Indians of South America. He was also a founder of La Hermosa, a Disciples of Christ Church for Puerto Ricans in New York City.

Folded materials were flattened. Staples, rubber bands, and metal clips were removed and replaced with plastic clips. All materials were placed in acid-free folders and boxes. The finding aid was created by Miguel Escobar in 2006, reviewed and updated by Brigette C. Kamsler in 2014 with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation (at which time folders 6 and 7 were added to the collection), and edited by Leah Edelman in 2020.

This collection contains material related to Inman's work with missions and aid and assistance to Latin America, including a survey of Panama, South American travel notes, and an essay on the Hispanic America Congress of Evangelical Churches in Havana, Cuba in 1929. The focus of the papers is on Panama, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Chile.
