Allen Macy Dulles, a theologian and pastor, was born on August 19, 1854 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died November 13, 1930 in Auburn, New York. He married Edith Foster on January 13, 1886. Dulles was the son of Reverend John Welsh Dulles, a Presbyterian missionary in Maras, India, and Harriet Dulles. He graduated from Princeton with a Bachelors degree in 1875 and a Masters degree in 1878, and from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1879. Dulles then traveled abroad to Leipzig University and Gottingen in Germany. Finally he received a doctoral degree from Hamilton College in 1901. Dulles engaged in archaeological research in the Sinaitic Peninsula of Egypt in 1881, then became pastor of the Trumbull Avenue Presbyterian Church of Detroit Michigan until 1887, before serving as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, New York for eighteen years. He later became professor of theology at the Auburn Theological Seminary in 1904. Dulles was an ardent Christian who mixed theological liberalism with austere devotion. With his wife he raised five children, three of whom (John Foster Dulles, Allen Welsh Dulles, and Eleanor Lansing Dulles) would go on to have distinguished careers within the American government.
