Biographical / Historical

Elbert Anderson was a New York cabinet maker who was joined in his business by his son, Elbert Jr. Other children of his were Peter, d.1803, A.B.1791, and James, who may have been the James who died in 1886. A son of Elbert Jr. was Henry James, 1799-1876, A.M.1818, Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy at Columbia, 1825-50, became Trustee, 1851, Professor Emeritus, 1866, travelled extensively, and died in India (Who Was Who in America, 1607-1896). James' son Peter was associated with Alexander Turney Stewart, famous New York merchant. His son, Samuel Cowdrey, 18^9-1908, whose correspondence appears in this collection, was born in Manhattan, and the family moved to Brooklyn in I855, where he married and died in 1908. His son, Lewis Nostrand, M.D.1895, father of Lewis Nostrand, Jr., 1904-, A.B. 1926, died in 1939. Still a Brooklyn resident, Lewis N., Jr., is a landscape architect attended the Columbia School
of Architecture in 1928 and has been serving the government of New York City since 1934, becoming the Cultural Architect in 1966.
 </bioghist>
