The Chin-Tang Lo Papers document the career of Chin-Tang Lo, the first scholar to earn a Ph.D. in Chinese literature in Taiwan from the National Taiwan University (1960). The collection includes diplomas, letters of appointment, and Lo's scholarly and autobiographical publications, as well as more than 500 letters from prominent intellectual, cultural, and political figures across East Asia and beyond. Also featured are photographs and inscriptions presented to Lo by mentors and colleagues, many associated with his Hundred Butterflies Album, reflecting his versatile pursuits as scholar, poet, and artist.
羅錦堂档案記錄了羅数十载的學術与艺术生涯。他於1960年成為首位在國立臺灣大學獲得中國文學博士學位的學者。該收藏包含學位證書、聘書、以及羅的學術與自傳性著作，並收錄了五百餘封來自東亞及其他地區重要文化與政治人物的信函。收藏中亦有照片與題詞，為師友所贈，許多與其《百蝶圖》相關，展現了羅氏身兼學者、詩人與藝術家的多重身分。

Biographical / Historical
Born in 1929 in Gansu, China, Chin-Tang Lo (1929-, Lo Chin-Tang, Luo Jingtang, 罗锦堂, 羅錦堂) was the first scholar to earn a Ph.D. in Chinese literature from National Taiwan University in 1960, with a dissertation committee chaired by Hu Shih—renowned scholar and writer—and including Liang Shih-chiu, Tai Jingnong, Dai Junren, among others. During the 1960s, Lo pursued postdoctoral research at Kyoto University, taught as an assistant professor at New Asia College in Hong Kong and as a lecturer at the University of Hong Kong, while also holding numerous visiting appointments. In 1966, he joined the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, where he remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1988. Lo's scholarship centered on classical Chinese literature, with particular emphasis on poetry, traditional drama of the Yuan and Ming dynasties, including sanqu (detached songs) and Kunqu opera, as well as Buddhist studies. Beyond his academic contributions, he was also an accomplished poet and artist, and his autobiographical writings and memoirs provide valuable insight into the history of Chinese studies in the twentieth century.

羅錦堂（1929年生，甘肅隴西縣）於 1960 年成為首位在國立臺灣大學獲得中國文學博士學位的學者。其博士論文答辩委員會由著名學者及作家胡適擔任主席，並有梁實秋、臺靜農、戴君仁等人參與。1960 年代間，羅氏曾赴京都大學從事博士後研究，並先後任教於香港新亞書院（助理教授）及香港大學（講師），同時受邀擔任多項訪問職。1966 年，他加入夏威夷大學馬諾阿分校，直至 1988 年退休為止。羅氏的學術研究專注於中國古典文學，尤重詩詞及元明戲曲，包括散曲與崑曲，並兼及佛學研究。除學術成果外，他亦是優秀的詩人與藝術家，其自傳性著述與回憶錄為二十世紀中國學術史留下了珍貴的見證。
Scope and Contents
The Chin-Tang Lo Papers document the distinguished academic and personal achievements of Chin-Tang Lo, who in 1960 became the first scholar to earn a Ph.D. in Chinese literature in Taiwan from National Taiwan University. Over the course of his career, Lo taught at leading institutions across Asia and North America, including New Asia College in Hong Kong, Kyoto University, and National Taiwan University, before joining the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, where he served as a tenured professor at the Center for Chinese Studies until his retirement. The collection traces Lo's academic trajectory and includes diplomas, letters of appointment, and a substantial body of his scholarly and autobiographical publications. Series III contains more than 500 letters from over 100 prominent intellectual, cultural, educational, and political figures from China, Taiwan, Japan, and beyond during the twentieth century, reflecting Lo's wide-ranging personal and professional engagements. Series IV comprises photographs and facsimiles of inscriptions presented to Lo by mentors and colleagues, many of which accompany his Hundred Butterflies Album, a testament to his creativity as both poet and artist.

羅錦堂档案記錄了羅錦堂卓越的學術成就與個人風采。羅氏於 1960 年成為首位在臺灣國立臺灣大學獲得中國文學博士學位的學者。在其學術生涯中，他曾於亞洲與北美多所知名學府任教，包括香港新亞書院、京都大學及國立臺灣大學，之後加入夏威夷大學馬諾阿分校，並於該校中國研究中心擔任終身教授直至退休。此館藏完整呈現羅的學術歷程，內容包括學位證書、聘書，以及大量學術著作與自傳性出版品。第三系列收錄來自中國、臺灣、日本及其他地區百餘位二十世紀重要思想家、教育家與政治人物的五百餘封信函，展現了羅氏廣泛的人際與學術交流。第四系列則包含照片及師友題贈的題詞影本，其中多件與其《百蝶圖》相關，彰顯了羅氏作為詩人與藝術家的創造力。
