Chen was Chiang's first wife. Connor prepared this typed manuscript, many page of which are photocopies, from the manuscript of the diary. Copies of related correspondence and other documents included to explain the origin of Chen's diary, her attempt to publish it and its suppression by Nationalist Chinese agents.
