The Juma Sultan papers includes a large collection of performances from the loft era in New York City, a significant but under-documented period of jazz history. The recordings collection of circa 430 items, spanning the period from 1965-1975 (on open reel and cassette) contains unique, unreleased concert recordings, with the exception of a small amount of the collection included in the box set of Aboriginal Music Society recordings,
In addition, the collection includes papers and photographs. The papers contain extensive documentation of Sultan's work as an organizer of musicians, relating to New York Musicians Organization (NYMO), the 1972 and 1973 NYMO festivals, the "Bicentennial Jazz Festival", Studio We, and Intermedia. The papers also include a rich set of flyers, pamphlets, African-American publications, and other ephemeral materials from 1970s New York.

Born in April 1942, Juma first started performing in the Bay Area. In 1966, a period of bi-coastal musician interactions, he came to the East Coast with saxophonist Sonny Simmons. He quickly established himself in the New York underground music scene, with dual bases of operation on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and in Woodstock, New York. He is probably best known for having played percussion in Jimi Hendrix's band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows at Woodstock in August 1969 (the concert where Hendrix performed his famous version of "The Star-Spangled Banner"). But Sultan was equally central in the emerging "loft jazz" scene in lower Manhattan, recording with many musicians, including Noah Howard and Archie Shepp, as well as organizing a percussion-centered group of his own, the Aboriginal Music Society.
With Ali Abuwi and James DuBoise, Sultan founded the collaborative performance and rehearsal space Studio We, located at 193 Eldridge Street. Along with Sam Rivers's Studio Rivbea on Bond Street and Rashied Ali's Ali's Alley on Greene Street, it was one of the most prominent musician-run venues to emerge in the 1970s.
Sultan was also pivotal in the founding of the New York Musicians Organization (NYMO) in 1972. When producer George Wein brought the Newport Jazz Festival to New York for the first time in 1972, many local musicians felt that he was ignoring New York-based talent. In response, NYMO organized a noted "counter-festival" in the summers of 1972 and 1973; these festivals received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Parks Department, and presented over 500 performances across the five boroughs. From 1974 to 1976, Sultan also helped organized a massive "Bicentennial Jazz Festival" of concerts across the city, supported by the New York Bicentennial Corporation.
Document cleaning was performed on all material in 2023. Although everything can be used in the reading room, patrons that are sensitive to mold or certain smells may still experience a reaction to materials that have been cleaned.

Sultan was heavily involved in organzing the New York Musicians Organization jazz festivals in the early 1970s. This subseries includes extensive documentation of the planning and execution of the festivals, including correspondence, contracts, publicity, schedules, and other documents.
This subseries includes minutes, bylaws, and planning documents for the Black arts organization Intramedia that Sultan and others were developing in the 1970s.
This subseries contains a variety of flyers, pamphlets, publications that Sultan gathered in the 1970s in the course of his work as a musician and community organizer in New York. It includes a some rare and ephemeral African-American periodicals, a wide range of jazz and Black flyers and pamphlets, and other materials.

Donor notes: Side 1 is rehearsal of an all percussion group. No info on box other than word "Afro" and "Drums." A lot of talk on side 1 after performance. Discussion of the details for a gig occurring in the near future. More music follows after. Juma describes as "Afro-American" style, rather than pure African. Side 2 begins with Robin Woodstock speaking to a young child (maybe 2yo?). This is followed by someone practicing a shenai or musette at 3.75ips (didn't have correct equipment to dub this. Third is the beginning of the percussion rehearsal from side 1.

Side 2 (heads out) has audibleat 3 3/4 what appears to be a radio show. Very low on tape - prbaby recorded over. Begins with a a percussion and spoken word event. Poem about black man riding the subway. Second poem "Niggers are scared of revolution." Could be Ju-Ju? Then goes into a commercial version of "Tracks of My Tears." Not sure who is singing. A few R&B tunes follow.

Seems to be recorded from a record. Side 2 begins with a quartet of trumpet, trombone, bass and drums. Significant damage to the material early on - levels jump around wildly. Steadys by about 10 minutes in. Between songs, voice can be heard saying "Scene [or C?] 1, take 2]." The second item on side 2 is Byard Lancaster's group. Recording is badly overdriven on original. Last item on side 2 is Bob Dylan from a recording.

Second item on side 1 is Jimi Hendrix with the Last Poets - an unreleased studio recording. Part 4 is cuts from Electric Ladyland. Seems like it might be dubs from the session reel, though. I think there is an alternate take of Freedom, here! This continues onto side 2, which begins with more guitar overdubs for the solo on "Freedom." After that is more experimentation with th following song, which begins with lyric "Drifting." They experiement with playing the tape backwards and having Jimi solo over it. Juma remembers this happening at his home at 335 3rd. A kitchenette, across the street from Richie Havens' studio where Juma built drums. Predecessor to Ode to Gypsy Sun, built on Mohammedan scale. Side 2 is duo of Pharoah and Juma at the same apartment on 3rd street. Brian Ross plays piccolo. Juma remembers this happening before Coltrane died, while Pharoah was still playing with Coltrane. Prime example of Ross trying to blow down the better known Snders. Juma remembers this as a common occurrence, which led to players thinking Ross was disrespectful. Juma switches to bass around minute 8. Second tune on side 2 seems to be a composition, worked on by Pharoah.
