This collection is arranged into 10 series. Artifacts are arranged by type of material they are primarily made from and sometimes are sub-divided further into more refined categories. Artifacts that could not be easily categorized are found in series IX: "Memorabilia".
Columbia University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States, was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. Samuel Johnson, the College's first president, held the first classes in October 1754 in the vestry room of the Trinity Church schoolhouse on lower Broadway. There were eight students in this first class. This room housed classes until 1760 when the school moved to a building on Park Place in downtown Manhattan, near the present site of City Hall. Classes were suspended during the American Revolution in 1776 and the building was used as a barrack and hospital for both British and American troops. When instruction resumed in 1784, King's College changed its name to Columbia, in keeping with the contemporary political climate.
Classes continued in the Park Place campus building until 1857, when, to accommodate its continuing expansion, the college moved to 49th Street and Madison Avenue. It remained at this site for forty years, until 1897, when the university was moved by President Seth Low to the more spacious Morningside Heights campus, designed as an urban academic village by McKim, Mead, and White.
During the last half of the nineteenth century, Columbia rapidly assumed the shape of a modern university. The Columbia School of Law was founded in 1858. The country's first mining school, a precursor of today's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, was established in 1864 and awarded the first Columbia Ph.D. in 1875. Barnard College for women became affiliated with Columbia in 1889; the medical school came under the aegis of the University in 1891, followed by Teachers College in 1893. In the 1880s, Columbia developed graduate faculties in political science, philosophy, and pure science, establishing Columbia as one of the nation's earliest center for graduate education. In 1896, the Trustees authorized the use of yet another new name, Columbia University, and today the institution is officially known as Columbia University in the City of New York.
During the presidency of Nicholas Murray Butler (1902-1945), Columbia emerged as a preeminent national center for educational innovation and scholarly achievement. The study of the sciences flourished along with the liberal arts. Franz Boas founded the modern science of anthropology at Columbia in the early decades of the twentieth century; the School of Journalism was established by bequest of Joseph Pulitzer in 1912; a course of study of original masterworks for undergraduates was created which ultimately developed into what is now know as the Core Curriculum; and atomic research was conducted by Columbia faculty, bringing the Physics Department to international prominence. In 1946, the School of International Affairs (now the School of International and Public Affairs) was founded marking the beginning of intensive growth in international relations as a major scholarly focus of the University.
Columbia continued to expand in the ensuing decades -- improving both its physical plant and creating new programs and infrastructure for a growing campus and community. Today it is considered one of the pre-eminent institutions of higher learning in the country and in the world.

The University Artifacts Collection contains objects, textiles, buttons, trophies, ribbons, plaques, plates, and other three-dimensional items used as well as created by or for the University since its founding in 1754 as King's College. Some items were created for specific individuals or classes.

Most likely a gift box present to Frank D. Fackenthal on his retirement/leaving Columbia in 1948. There is a cardboard box (red) with the initials F.D.F in silver. Inside is a metal box with engraved signatures of senior administrators across the lid (Carman, Gildersleeve, Pickel, Pegram, etc.) The box is empty, lined with red leather.
From the Gatekeeper's Lodge, one of the original buildings from the Bloomingdale Asylum (now CU's campus). 1879 is the date of construction of the building.

Plaque hung in the Rosenthal Memorial Room in honor of Lewis A. Rosenthal (CC 1928) by his parents. Names of this room's occupants from 1955-56 to 1969-70 listed on the plaque. Box also contains a printed email from Rogher Lehecka explaining the history of "Prize Rooms" of which this was one.

Two metal labels on wooden storage box: (1) "The Mace of Columbia University," and (2) "Gift of John Munro Woolsey, LL.B. 1901, LL.D. 1929, April 1933." Paper Label: The eighteenth-century mace carried in the Columbia ceremonies was given to the University by the late Judge John Munro Woolsey, LL.B. '01, LL.D. '29. It is of Sheffield plate, topped with a King's crown over a design of acanthus leaves. The mace was the symbol of authority in British Courts.
Mace is metal and wood, with crown, in wooden box, with two keys. Plaque on box engraved: "President's Mace, Columbia University, Ex Dono, John Munroe Woolsey, LLB 1901-LLD 1929, May 1, 1941".

18th century. Engraved: "IDUANE". Handle decorated with dragon's head. Leather and silver sheath. Mark: "PV." Belonged to James Duane, lawyer, jurist, and Revolutionary leader from New York. He later went on to serve as a delegate to the Continental Congress, a U.S. District judge, state senator, and Mayor of N.Y.
Belonged to Captain Edward V. W. Keen. Studying law at Columbia until the outbreak of WWI. His officers and men presented him with the sword after clearing mine fields.

Silver with ivory handle in Tiffany's blue and white drawstring bag. Ceremonial trowel for cornerstone layings, engraved with names of commemorated buildings, 1895-1950. Mark: "Tiffany & Co., 3725 makers 6103, sterling silver, 025-1000."
Two bereavement rings. One for Sarah Beach, Samuel Johnson's second wife, died in 1763 at the age of 61; and one for Samuel Johnson, died January 6, 1772, at the age of 75.

Inscription: "In Memory of Seth Low, died July 19, 1853, aged 71 years." Woman's oval brooch. R: lock of hair (light brown, blond, silver) under beveled glass, surrounded by 32 small pearls. V: Simple latch pin. Created in memory of CU President Seth Low's grandfather of the same name.
Gold colored (brass?) men's 1956 Graduate School of Business class ring once belonging to Larry M. Kent. Black stone with raise brass image of a column with the word "virtue" across column. Raised images of king's crown with "CU" intertwined on one side of ring. Other side has an image of a lion standing on a "56". Inscription: "Graduate School of Business, Columbia. '56". Donated to University Archives in 2010.
Football shaped charm with "COLUMBIA" written on it. Bought by University Archivist, Susan Hamson, on eBay in December 2013 from Michael D. Keohane.
Dwight D. Eisenhower inspired cuff links and tie pins with the word "IKE" on them. Gifts of Alice Bonnell and Yarema Hutsaliuk.
Assortment of items belonging to Frank D. Fackenthal. Includes numerous cuff links and stick pins in leather boxes. Also contains a corkscrew from The Providence Biltmore Hotel, a utility kit with a pencil, scissors, file, and knife, made by "Cross London." A French Tunisian 10 centimes coin from 1908, a silver colored container with aspirin, a necklace of black beads, a rhinestone evening bag. There is also a paper commemorating the issuance of a medal by the Town of Verdun for heroism in WWI, Nov. 20th, 1916.
Locket with colorized daguerreotype of a young, beardless Frederick A.P. Barnard. Vertical orientation portrait; somewhat oxidized; photographer unidentified. Case cover material, metal, with an etched pattern and the initials "FAPB" on the back. The locket is housed in a custom case, brown velvet interior, with a gold lettering: "Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard b. 1809 Pres. Columbia Coll. 1864-1888, d. 1889. Mrs. Margaret Barnard b. 1827 d. 1891. This portrait was purchased at sale of her effects 1891. Presented by S.P. Avery, 1898."
Formerly attached to the trustee chairs in the Low Library Trustee Room. Most plates have a trustee's name (Mr. Dodge, Mr. Sammis); other plates feature a title or role (The Treasurer). The retired nameplates were sometimes offered to the departing trustee as a souvenir. Transferred from the Office of the Secretary in December 2023.

George Adams: Celestial Equinoctial Ring Dial (armillary sphere/astrolabe). According to an advertisement in the New York Times (Jan 8, 1984) "An 18th century astrolabe made by the Royal Instrument Maker to King George II." On display in UA Reading Room.

Frederick A. Wurzbach, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S, dissecting kit used at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, 59th Street, 1915 and 1916.
Rudolph Schoenheimer's microscope. Schoenheimer received this microscope from his parents. After this death in 1941, Morris Graff, his laboratory technician, inherited the device. Graff made the glassware for the lab, conducted experiments and even served as a subject. The microscope was donated by his son, Jon Graff, in the Summer of 2017
According to an advertisement in the New York Times of January 8, 1984: "Ironically, this telescope, also made by the Royal Instrument maker, was loaned to George Washington for his use during the Revolutionary War."

Notes: 1910-1920 dates. Only entries are for 1910, 1912 and 1913. Metal Kings Crown surrounding a velvet round inside the crown. Crown is removable and sits on a wooden and metal base with columns and plates for each year's race winner ("won by" "time" "competitors"). Green felt on bottom of base.

The Goodwood Cup became an annual award in 1864. It was presented each year to the most popular member of the Junior class. Fifteen of these cups were awarded before the prize fell prey to the manipulations of fraternity and class politicians. The Cup was given out for the last time in 1878.

This series is a "catch all" for objects that defy categorization (made of multiple types of material) and for collected memoriabilia. Collected memoriabilia was not otherwise easy to categorize as it was originally foldered together and consists of different types of objects. Highlights of this series include an ear trumpet used by Columbia President F.A.P. Barnard, a chemistry set used by Harmon Cozzens (EM 1885), and the collected memorabilia from a 1939 visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Columbia University.

Stone. Engraved: "This stone came from Houses of Parliament, 1941." Label: "This inkwell is made from a stone from the bombed portion of the Houses of parliament in London. It was presented to Butler by his friend Baron Queenborough in May 1946."
Wooden box with metal clasp measuring 15" long x 5.5" high x 4" wide. The box contains a few dozen lantern slides showing etchings, measurements, and equations used for teaching engineering at Columbia's 49th Street campus.
