Professional papers of social worker Helen Rehr. The collection documents Rehr's long career as a social worker, from her college and graduate coursework in the subject through her own impressive career. The collection is particularly rich in Rehr's scholarly and professional output, and includes a significant number of articles and books published by Rehr, as well as lectures and addresses on various topics.
Upon her retirement from Mount Sinai she helped to found the National Association of Social Workers National Center for Social Policy and Practice. She also served on the Columbia University School of Social Work's Committee on doctoral education.
Rehr was an active advocate for the social work profession. In addition to her professional practice, she taught social work, holding visiting professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, Ben Gurion University, Hebrew University, and Haifa University. She was an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, and was named a Social Work Pioneer by that organization and received their prestigious Knee/Whitman Lifetime Achievement Award in Health and Mental Health.
Helen Rehr died in 2013 at the age of 93.

Dr. Helen Rehr was a prominent social worker and a pioneer in the practice of social work in a health care setting.
Rehr was born in 1919 in New York City. She received her bachelor's degree from Hunter College in 1940 and a master's in Social Work from Columbia University in 1945. She spent several years at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in the social work department, and continued her work at Mount Sinai when she returned to Columbia University's School of Social Work to work on her doctorate, which she received in 1970. She retired as Director of the Department of Social Work at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1986.
