The surviving files of official correspondence, reports, documents, and printed materials of King's College from 1750 to 1784 and Columbia College from 1785 to 1890, as well as Columbia University up to 1964. The King's College era materials include grants, deeds, indentures, lists of governors, leases, accounts, etc. The Columbia College era papers commence with documentation regarding the attempts to revive the college at the end of the American Revolution. In the later period these papers primarily supplement and document the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees. Much material was destroyed and scattered in the late 19th century leaving this collection quite incomplete.

Abstract Or Scope

Papers of McCrea containing manuscripts of his addresses and essays on classical themes and on specific Latin authors including Cicero, Horace, and Lucretius. There is an unpublished book manuscript in various stages of completition entitled "Cicero as Philosopher." Letters to McCrea from Nicholas Murray Butler, Gonzalez Lodge, Frank A. Patterson, and Ernest G. Sihler, dealing with university and academic matters. In addition to some family documents and photographs of McCrea, there are twelve folders of essays and themes written for Columbia College classes by a relative, Robert Glenn McCrea, who received his A.B. degree in 1896. Also a group of term papers submitted to McCrea, a grade book for Latin courses, and exam questions prepared by McCrea for M.A. and Ph.D. candidates.

Correspondence and papers of Vroom, consisting chiefly of letters received by Vroom from a variety of individuals including J.H. Austin, Andrew Deutcher, Alfred Gale, P.B. Kennedy, James Parker, and John M. Wycoff. These letters deal with business, legal, and political affairs. There are a few personal letters, various legal papers and documents, and memoranda written by Vroom. The early material contains Vroom family letters and documents including letters to Vroom's father, Peter D. Vroom (1745-1831). Also of interest is Vroom's Latin-English vocabulary notebook kept during his junior year at Columbia College, 1807. The notebook contains a list of his classmates. In addition there is his 1808 Columbia College Commencement address.

Knopf and Oxford University Press; with his literary agent Curtis Brown, Ltd.; with HORIZON MAGAZINE, as chairman of its Advisory Editorial Board; with the Book-of-the-Month Club, as a Judge; with Encyclopedia Britannica Sound Seminars; correspondence concerning his very popular syndicated radio talks; and letters from his readers, ranging from members of women's literary clubs to headmasters of British secondary schools.
