The collection is comprised mainly of black and white professional photographs of masks, figures, weapons, utensils, musical instruments, and other objects from Africa and Oceania. There is also a smaller amount of Northwest American Indian art. The objects were photographed individually or in small groups against a plain background. The photos are in their original order, organized by region and then by specific location, ethnic or cultural group, and/or type of artifact. A few photos have individual labels, but most are labeled only with a handwritten number on the backing paper. There is no corresponding guide to the numbering system. Wingert was an avid photographer and the photos were likely taken by him, but are not signed. The collection also contains articles and book drafts by Wingert, copies of published articles and books by Wingert and others, original pen and ink illustrations of objects, additional photographs and negatives that do not seem to be part of the photo file, and small amounts of correspondence and other documents.

Field notebooks detailing the customs and ceremonies of the Native American Hopi tribe, collected by Elsie Worthington Clews Parsons, PhD (1874-1941). Thirty of these volumes were the notebooks of Alexander M. Stephen (d. 1894), a U.S. Army officer who, in about 1882, started observing Hopi life. Although chiefly concerned with the Hopis, there are some notes on Hopi-Navajo relations and a few references to the Native American Tewa and Hokya tribes. Stephen's penciled notes and drawings were edited and published by Dr. Parsons as the Hopi journal of Alexander M. Stephen (New York: Columbia University Press, 1936). Also included are three unpublished notebooks of observations made by a young American physician with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Jeremiah Sullivan (1850-1916), who lived among the Hopis (1881-1888) in the village of Sichomovi. A letter from anthropologist Alfred L. Kroeber, PhD (1876-1960) to Dr. Parsons explains the provenance of one of Sullivan's notebooks. These last three notebooks [Vols. 31-33] have also been attributed to Alexander M. Stephen by Alex Patterson (February 1994). [See, Alex Patterson's full note at subseries I.2. The collection consists of the manuscript materials relating to The American Colonies in the 18 Century 4 v. Columbia University Press, 1924, by Herbert L. Osgood Professor of History in Columbia University.

Professional correspondence, diaries, unpublished articles, lecture notes, abstracts, and other manuscripts by Mitchell. Subjects include economic theory and its history, business cycles, money, national planing, anthropology and psychology, and published material by Mitchell and others.
