Material gathered by Oswald Garrison Villard in the researches for his biography JOHN BROWN, 1800-1859: A BIOGRAPHY FIFTY YEARS AFTER. A large part of the materials is copies of correspondence both contemporary and of a later period, concerning John Brown and his associates, especially in the Kansas Territory and at the Harper's Ferry raid. Of the original letters in the collection, many are from descendants and family of John Brown and the men who accompanied him on his raid. There are clippings, pamphlets, proof sheets, and other printed matter. Photographs number 181 items.

Correspondence, speeches, speech materials, news clippings, subject files, audio and videotapes relating to the professional activity of Arthur Levitt, Jr. The papers and audiovisual material deal primarily with his tenure as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (1993-2001), but also contain earlier records, including some materials relating to Levitt's school years at the Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School and at Williams College, and his work at Hayden Stone, the American Stock Exchange, and the New York Economic Development Corporation, and his advocacy of the National Endowment of the Arts during the 1991-1992 funding controversy. These papers also contain materials relating to his father, Arthur Levitt, Sr., who served for 24 years as New York State Comptroller.

Correspondence, manuscripts, biographical and printed materials. The first series contains a small amount of personal and professional correspondence from the 1940s to 1970s, manuscripts of poetry and of theses and research papers from Berl's graduate studies at Leipzig and Columbia, biographical materials including photographs, reminiscences by and about Berl, and a few documents from his early years in Germany. The second and larger series includes papers which were posthumously arranged for publication by Susan Leibtag. The bulk of these writings are on topics related to psychology and social welfare, with a small number on philosophy and on Jewish identity as it relates to social work.
