Typescripts made by Stern of Lewis Henry Morgan's INDIAN JOURNALS, 1859-1862 (Ann Arbor, 1959), and of Morgan's correspondence with missionaries, traders, etc., pertaining to behavior in various primitive societies. This correspondence assisted Morgan in the preparation of his book ANCIENT SOCIETY (New York, 1871). The material was used by Stern in his publications, LEWIS HENRY MORGAN, SOCIAL EVOLUTIONIST (Chicago, 1931); THE FAMILY, PAST AND PRESENT (New York, 1938); and "Lewis Henry Morgan, American Ethnologist" and Lewis Henry Morgan: An Appraisal of His Scientific Contributions" in Part III of HISTORICAL SOCIOLOGY (New York, 1959). Also, photographs pertaining to Stern's THE LUMMI INDIANS OF NORTHWEST WASHINGTON (New York, 1934); typescripts made by Stern of the correspondence of Morgan with Lorimer Fison (1832-1907) and Alfred William Howitt (1830-1908) for the period 1870-1881. Fison and Howitt were prominent Australian ethnographers and used the correspondence in their work on Australian Aborigine kinship systems. There is also some evidence that the correspondence influenced a later edition of Morgan's ANCIENT SOCIETY. Stern selected and edited some of the letters for the AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST (vol. 32, nos. 2-3, April-Sept., 1930).

Manuscripts, letters, and printed materials relating largely to Gehlke's book EMILE DURKHEIM'S CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY and to the sociologist Franklin Henry Giddings.

An extensive collection of research files.

This collection includes letters from prominent sociologists and economists such as Richard T. Ely, Henry C. Adams, Simon N. Patten, Frank W. Taussig, Francis A. Walker, and others, which deal with academic activities in the field of sociology and with Giddings' book, THE PRINCIPLES OF SOCIOLOGY (New York, 1896). In addition, there are letters and manuscripts dealing with the League of Peace, forerunner of the League of Nations; typescripts of his speeches on various subjects; miscellaneous notes; one box of students' term papers and theses dealing with sociological topics; and related printed materials. There are also questionnaires and letters pertaining to a study made in 1911-1912 by George Esdras Bevans on THE DISTRIBUTION OF WORKINGMEN'S TIME. The correspondents include: Jane Addams, William Jennings Bryan, Charles Beard, and Jacob Riis. There is also a bibliography of publications by Giddings and of works relating to his field; and genealogical notes of the Miller/Millard family of New England.

The surviving editorial, production, and publicity files of Greenberg: Publisher. The Greenberg: Publisher library includes 462 titles published by the firm. Also, personal papers of Jacob Walter Greenberg consisting of letters, manuscripts, photographs, clippings, printed ephemera, and memorabilia. These are biographical in nature relating to Greenberg, his family, friends, business associates, authors, politicians, and other public figures. Among the letters are one each from public figures including Robert Benchley, Bennett Cerf, Fiorello La Guardia, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Manuscripts, notebooks, typescripts, and correspondence of Moore, dealing largely with general economic theory, econometrics, and sociology. Included in the collection are the manuscripts of his published works, among them ECONOMIC CYCLES (New York, 1914), GENERATING ECONOMIC CYCLES (New York, 1923), and SYNTHETIC ECONOMICS (New York, 1929), as well as those of unpublished studies"The Good Life in a Progressive Democracy" and "Morals of Mediocrity." The notebooks include essays and miscellaneous notes of Vilfredo Pareto, Ernest Renan, Marcus Aurelius, and other sociologists and philosophers. The correspondence includes letters from prominent economists such as John Bates Clark, Antoine Augustin Cournot, F.Y. Edgeworth, Edwin R.A. Seligman, Alfred Marshall, Frank Taussig, and Léon Walras. Accompanying the collection is Prof. Moore's library of books, pamphlets, and journals, many of them annotated, bearing upon all phases of economics. Also, two boxes of textbooks from Moore's library, used by him when he was a student.

A manuscript, notes, and bibliographies prepared by Saposnekow on the Russo-French sociologist I︠A︡kov A. Novikov (1849-1912). Also included is a letter by Pitirim Sorokin, advising Saposnekow as to how to proceed with his research on Novikov.
