His Columbia files include professional correspondence, lecture notes, course-related materia, and a bibliographical card index of American and European history. Dean Carman's abiding interest both in the academic and general communities is reflected in numerous special files which include correspondence to him as book review editor of HISTORICAL OUTLOOK, 1925-1929, as participant in Columbia's AMERICAN CULTURE SERIES, ca. 1935-1942, and STUDIES IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN AGRICULTURE, ca. 1935-1945. There are numerous files relating to his membership on the New York City Board of Higher Education, 1938-1964, the New York State Board of Mediation, 1941-1955, and the Japan American Committee on Intellectual Exchange. The many folders on American colleges attest to the Dean's concern for the quality and improvement of undergraduate education in the United States. Included are some of the working papers for PREPARATION FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION IN THE LIBERAL ARTS (published 1953), and THE RESURVEY OF PREPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION IN THE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE (published 1961). Among the few and incomplete book manuscripts there is a typescript of LINCOLN AND PATRONAGE (published 1943) with handwritten addition and correction.

Bradley, Prince Charles of England, Joseph Dixon, Dwight and Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Rosina Lhévinne, Paul Niehans, the Morgan twins (Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt and Thelma Morgan Converse Furness), Jovanka Tito, Harry and Bess Truman, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor; and large files on crime, recluses, New York City history, and travel. There are extensive drafts and source materials for her unpublished autobiography. There are pencil sketches, pen-and-ink drawings, watercolors, charcoal sketches, photographs, and printed copies by Helen Worden Erskine Cranmer and by others.

Correspondence includes both personal and business letters, dealing with wildlife conservation, civic interests, and birding. There is some correspondence of George A. Hough, Sr., father of H.B. Hough, who was editor of the New Bedford MA Standard. Most of the correspondence is arranged alphabetically, by personal name or subject, out-going and in-coming filed together. Henry and Elizabeth Hough's correspondence, for which there are no in-coming or related letters, are filed chronologically. Cataloged correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Max Eastman, Helen Keller, John F. Kennedy, Emily Post, and James Reston.

Correspondence with many librarians and editors about the Bliss classification system and Bliss' writings, a part of his "Autobiographical record" photographs and printed pamphlets, and articles by Bliss and others. There are also fifteen notebooks compiled by Joseph L. Harrison which contain brief annotated national bibliographies. Three scrapbooks contain correspondence, articles, and memorabilia.

Collection is made up of a scrapbook containing 2 pencil on trace sketches, newspaper clippings, and clippings from House and Gardens Magazine (ca 1922) relating to various residences not associated with the architect; 2 diplomas, one from the State Board of Examiners of Architects, Cook County, Chicago (1897) and the other from University of the State of New York State Board for the Registration of Architects (1916); 28 watercolor paintings (ca. 1907) depicting various locations in Europe, including Paris, Florence, Vevay, Versailles, and Venice; 34 pencil drawings of Beaux Art buildings, including residences designed by the architect and illustrations for Good Housekeeping Magazine; and photographs of Salisbury and Winchester Cathedrals, which do not appear to have been taken by the architect.
