This collection of records document the institutional history of the Center for US-China Arts Exchange, established in 1978. Under the directorship of professor and renowned composer Chou Wen-chung, the Center is a not-for-profit organization that connected arts professionals from the US and China through a spectrum of curated programs, conferences, and research trips. Bulk dated between 1977 and 2003, materials in this collection consist of correspondence, reports, photographs, printed materials, as well as audiovisual items. The collection serves as important material evidence that help to tell the recent history of cultural communications among individuals and organizations across the Pacific.

This collection includes nine letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson as well as letters of Louis Agassiz, Amos Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, John Lothrop Motley, Charles Sumner, and John Greenleaf Whittier. In addition, there are two incomplete manuscripts by Emerson and one document from the Liverpool Custom-house signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne as Consul for the United States. The collection also includes the corrected typescript, index, and page and galley proofs for Thomas Franklin Currier, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (New York, 1953) which was edited by Professor Tilton. Also, some early correspondence and photographs of the Tilton family and friends. There are letters from the actors Annie Louise Ames, Richard J. Dillon, and Hans L. Meery to Tilton's grandfather, Bernard Paul Verne, as well as photographs, tintypes, and daguerreotypes of the Verne family and friends.

The papers include correspondence, manuscripts, documents, printed materials and photographs -- most of which principally concern Fedor Shali︠a︡pin. There are twelve letters and postcards from Shali︠a︡pin, and one or two items each from Aleksandr Grechaninov, Olǵa Knipper-Chekhova, and Sergeĭ Rakhmaninov. There are manuscripts by Strakhova-Ermans, entitled "Vospominanii︠a︡ starogo professora penii︠a︡" and "Penie: Ego tekhnika i iskusstvo." There are photographs of Shali︠a︡pin in his operatic roles and with his family; and photographs of Olǵa Knipper-Chekhova, Aleksandr Glazunov, and of Sergeĭ Rakhmaninov and Aleksandr Grechaninov (with the faculty of the Russian Conservatory in Paris). Printed materials include programs of concerts by Shali︠a︡pin and others, and a copy of Strakhova-Ermans' book, "Le chant"(1946).

The Patricia Koo Tsien and Kia Chi Tsien papers document the decades of internationally rooted lives of the Tsien couple, as well as family history materials on the Koo and Tsien families. The bulk of the papers consist of files associated with the professional and personal trajectories of Patricia Koo Tsien and Kia Chi Tsien, arranged in respective series. Also included are materials pertaining to the research of Koo and Tsien's family histories, in particular manuscripts, transcripts, and annotated copies of the Wellington Koo Memoir, and materials on Oei Huilan, Madame Wellington Koo.

The collection contains Simonovich's correspondence, manuscripts, doucments, subject files, and printed materials. There are letters to Simonovich from a friend who had settled in Yugoslavia, A. S. Poplavskiĭ, and Belgian postcards from before World War I. Manuscripts deal with Simonovich's experiences in the Imperial army on the Caucasian front and in the White army under general Slashchev. There are also essays devoted to the Russian emigre colonies in Belgium and in France. The subject files concern the Belgian section of the Gallipolian Society (Obʺshchestvo Gallipolit︠s︡ev) and Russian emigre events in Belgium. The printed materials include chiefly miscellaneous journals and clippings, some with articles by Simonovich.
