Cover designs; original art work for illustrations, vignettes, charts, and mastheads; prints and photographs from the files of THE SURVEY. The collection consists primarily of art work for SURVEY GRAPHIC; some material for MIDMONTHLY is also included. SURVEY GRAPHIC included articles on broad social issues, including public health, world peace, welfare, labor conditions, and government regulations. It had striking pictorial covers, and was extensively illustrated with drawings, cartoons, reproductions of contemporary prints, and photographs, all represented in the collection. The cataloged artists include Wilfred Jones and Hendrik Willem Van Loon.

Also, minutes kept by Richard Michell Upjohn for the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter, Committee for Library and Publications, 1868-1877, and Executive Committee, 1867-1889; sketchbooks, 1850s-1870s; photographs of Upjohn buildings and portraits of Richard Upjohn; correspondence, wills, memorial tributes, manuscripts, printed material, and miscellaneous personal and business documents; and several drawings by other architects including Alexander Jackson Davis, Hobart Brown Upjohn, and Calvert Vaux

Photograph albums containing photographs of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle, their house at Cheyne Row, members of their families, and their friends in the literary and political worlds. Six of the volumes bear the notes and annotations of Thomas Carlyle. Also, there is a small group of Thomas Carlyle autographs; a seventh photograph album bearing the annotations of Carlyle's nephew, Alexander Carlyle; and copies of 33 photographs.

The papers include correspondence, subject files, photographs, and printed materials. The majority of the collection concerns the mission of the American Red Cross to Russia in 1917-1918; Thacher served as a secretary of the mission. There are letters and telegrams by W.B. Thompson and Raymond Robins, records of supplies, shipments, and distribution reports and over 600 photographs from Russia, China, and Romania. There is substantial correspondence from 1918-1919 concerning Russia, including letters by Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, and Lillian Wald. A substantial part of the collection concerns Russian war relief in 1941-1942, an area in which Thacher was active. Printed materials include a pamphlet and an article on Russia prepared by Thacher after his return from that country in early 1918.

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, art work, audio cassette, printed materials by and about Thomas Merton. The correspondence covers the years from his study at Columbia to his death in Bangkok. Among the cataloged correspondence are: Daniel Berrigan, Mark Van Doren, Luis Somoza, Jacque Maritain, Aldous Huxley, James Laughlin, Robert Lax, Grover Cleveland Smith, John Howard Griffin, William Henry Shannon and Victoria Ocampo. The extensive manuscript collection was assembled primarily by Sister Thérèse Lentfoehr, Mark Van Doren, and Robert Shepherd. Among the more significant manuscripts are: corrected typescript of THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN; fragments of his NOVITIATE JOURNAL; notebooks and journals used in THE SIGN OF JONAS; numerous draft of poems; most of his lecture and conference notes which he used while serving as master of scholastics and, later, master of novices. There is an extensive collection of mimeographed articles, many inscribed to Sister Thérèse Lentfoehr; four watercolors by his father, Owen Merton, and many humorous and devotional drawings by Merton; many photographs of Merton, as well as photographs taken by Merton. There is an audio cassette of the radio play by Bruce Stewart entitled ME AND MY SHADOW, produced by the BBC in 1989. The printed material consists of numerous clippings and some offprints, pamphlets, and books

Books, correspondence, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and photographs of Thomas S. Jones. Correspondents include literary figures. Manuscripts of automatic writing are included. Photographs, 1894-1931, include portraits of Jones and others, views of his various homes, and of European travels, particularly his visit to Glastonbury Abbey in England, 1922.

Letters and papers of Olcott. Among the subjects covered are the history of the Bank; banks and politics in New York during the Jacksonian era; the operations of the safety Fund Banking System; land acquisition in the West, particularly Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, and western New York; the Boston and Albany Railroad; the Corning Land Company; and the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. The papers are divided into the following groups: letters received, including correspondence with Martin Van Buren, Samuel P. Chase, William Henry Seward, William B. Astor, Silas Wright, William Kent, J. Pierpont Morgan, and Horatio Seymour; documents including land deeds, wills, leases, bonds, sureties, orders to pay, checks, bank ledgers, partnership agreements, earnings reports, tax assessments, and land sales; household bills and receipts; bank notes including excellent examples of early American currency; miscellaneous account books, photographs, and printed material; patents for Michigan and Ohio lands to William Thompson, Thomas W. Olcott, and Garrit Denniston signed by Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren (proxy signatures).

The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files and printed material. The correspondence is primarily from the 1920s and includes letters from G. E. Lv́ov and S. P. Mel'gunov and one or two items each from M. A. Aldanov, I. A. Bunin, N. V. Chaikovskii, A. L. Tolstaiia, V. F. Zeeler and others. The manuscripts are primarily in the form of notes in Polner's hand and include Polner's diary from the years 1919-1925. The documents belong to Tikhon Polner's brother, Sergei, and deal with the latter's expulsion from the USSR in 1921. There is extensive material in the subject files on the writings of Lev Tolstoĭ, including typescript copies of several Tolstoi manuscripts and clippings of the reviews of Polner's book on Tolstoi. Also included is a photograph of A. I. Herzen from the 1850s.

Correspondence, memoranda, contracts, royalty statements, manuscripts, diaries, daybooks, photographs, and printed material of Strassman. The correspondence is with authors and book and magazine publishers, covering nearly forty years of Strassman's career as a literary agent. Of particular interest are the files concerning the works of William Goyen, Harry Mark Petrakis, and Friderike Zweig, the first wife of Stefan Zweig.
